MILLVILLE — This year’s Citizens United to Protect the Maurice River & Its Tributaries World Series of Birding team will feature a returning championship crew that competed as a collective in 2014 and 2020.
The event, the world’s largest birding competition, is hosted by NJ Audubon, helping many dollars to be raised for conservation and environmental awareness for 40 years. CU’s first team participated in 2007.
This year the World Series takes place for 24 hours on Saturday, May 13 and the Fish Hawks team will feature the following members: Mary Watkins, captain; Tony Klock, Kathy Michel, and returning member Laurie Pettigrew.
The money raised by the team supports CU’s avian surveys, nesting projects, and nature awareness programs. The team will be looking and listening for as many different species as they can find along the NJ Delaware Bayshore. In the past the team has found 130-140 different species and they’re always hoping to break a 150-species ceiling.
