Students at Cunningham Academy in Vineland recently showed off their green thumbs – and bountiful seedlings. Local farmers from K&J Organic Farms volunteered their time to help improve greenhouse operations and allow the students to see how produce is grown from seed to harvest. The volunteers educated the students on the process and techniques of growing fruit, vegetables, and flowers, along with the business side of farming. After seeing the seedlings through to harvest, students had a chance to take a trip to the Vineland Produce Auction to see how produce is stored and transported throughout the country. The Greenhouse Project was born from an idea by former Assistant Superintendent John Frangipani, who wanted a hands-on project for the Cunningham students that would also teach them real-world skills. Above, students Isabella Perez, left, and Dominick Hill inspect the growth.
