O (Crab Basket) Christmas Tree? Indeed!

By DAN PODEHL

PORT NORRIS — The Commercial Township Recreation Committee asked and the community responded. Thanks to committee member Anna DeFabrites, the quaint historic village is home to an approximately 14-foot tall crab basket Christmas tree. It’s on display on Memorial Avenue next to the township building, 1678 Main St.
The Christmas tree is constructed of crab baskets which community members painted individually as a fund-raiser after the recreation committee sought the community’s involvement. Some baskets feature nautical themes, others flash the holiday spirit. And, there are baskets painted in memory of loved ones, according to Michelle Bateman, an active member of the community.
Bateman noted that DeFabrites had heard of such a unique tree in Maryland. The plan is for this to become the committee’s annual Christmas tree tradition. While this year’s creation features 100 baskets, Bateman is hoping for an larger one next year.
“Everyone is excited about the tree,” she said. “It’s created quite a buzz around town.”
The tree is lit from 5 p.m. to midnight daily.

Uniquely festive. The Commercial Township Recreation Committee developed the fun idea of a crab basket Christmas tree to honor the area’s industry during the holiday season. The community responded in kind, as seen here. (Nancy Patterson photo)
