TRENTON — New Jersey residents are being encouraged to take advantage of rebates available to consumers for the purchase of Energy Star-qualified appliances.
Energy Star® is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy designed to conserve energy and decrease pollution through improved energy efficiency standards.
Until Aug. 31 or while funds last, New Jersey residents who purchase Energy Star-qualified clothes washers, dishwashers, or refrigerators may receive rebates from $25 to $100. Those who purchase Energy Star- qualified air conditioners or dehumidifiers may also receive a rebate.
The rebate program is another result of federal stimulus funding (the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act) and participating retailers will offer mail-in or instant rebates upon purchase.
“We’re going to have a hot summer in New Jersey this year, so residents looking to purchase an air conditioner should keep in mind that they can receive a $20 rebate if they buy one that is Energy Star-qualified,” says 3rd District lawmaker John Burzichelli, deputy speaker of the N.J. Assembly. Energy Star-qualified dehumidifiers carry a $25 rebate.
“We want our constituents to know that this program presents a great opportunity to save money,” adds Senate President Stephen Sweeney. “If you need a new refrigerator or dishwasher, please take advantage of these rebates while they last.”
In an effort to increase energy efficiency throughout the state, residents who recycle their old and still-running refrigerators or freezers may receive a $50 rebate.
According to the N.J. Board of Public Utilities, “refrigerators and freezers manufactured before 1990 can use up to three times more electricity than newer appliances and can cost a typical household $150 a year to run.”
“This program is a real winner for New Jersey,” says Assemblywoman Celeste Riley, the third member of the 3rd District legislative team.
“Improving energy efficiency means both short- and long-term savings for residents as well as a cleaner environment.”
