MILLVILLE — The 77th annual memorial Trip Around the Horn tour honoring deceased members of the military from Cumberland County is Sunday morning, May 23.
The tour, which follows a tradition begun on the Sunday prior to Memorial Day 1933, includes a memorial service and wreath- laying ceremony at each of 21 cemeteries and monuments where deceased veterans of every war from the American Revolution to the continuing War on Terror have been laid to rest.
Members of the community are invited to join members of Nabb-Leslie American Legion Post, Bush-Kerrick VFW Post and All Wars Memorial DAV along with members of Scout troops in the memorial honors. The day will begin with breakfast, served from 6:30 a.m. at the Legion Post, 220 Buck St. Following breakfast, a caravan will leave from the Legion parking lot at 7:45 to begin the 75-mile tour.
A mid-point break is provided by the Mauricetown Fire Company, and lunch will be served by the Legion Post at the tour’s conclusion.
Bus transportation for the tour is provided by Cumberland Area Transit System; security, by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department.
The tour tradition was established in 1933 when members of Malvern J. Nabb American Legion Post made the first organized visits to the outlying cemeteries to decorate the graves of veterans. Today, one of the stops on the tour is the monument in Commercial Township marking the “Watering Hole,” which honors the memorial of those who made the tour in the past and have now also “answered the final call.”
