This is the second year the Alliance has tracked motor vehicle fatalities in the region as they occurred, reading articles about each fatal crash. An analysis of that data reveals that 49 percent of all fatal crashes in the region are single vehicle crashes with seniors, over 55, accounting for the highest percentage of all the fatalities at 36 percent.
Male motorists continue to be overrepresented in the data, accounting for 78 percent and 87 percent of all motor vehicle fatal crashes in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
Motorcycle fatal crashes in the region continues to account for around 16 percent of all fatal crashes in the region while pedestrians killed by motor vehicle decreased by half, from 18 percent to 9 percent. Aside from overall motor vehicle fatalities, this is one topic that generates a different trend between South Jersey and the state where 131 pedestrians were killed accounting for 24 percent, the same as 2012.
