A Weekend to Celebrate the Delaware Bay

COMMERCIAL TWP. — The 2009 edition of Delaware Bay Days is a multi-faceted two-day festival: Saturday, June 13 will feature seafood & folklife in Bivalve/Port Norris & Heislerville; Sunday, June 14, highlights watercraft & wild­life outside of Mauricetown & New Hope.

Here are the highlights:

Saturday

11a.m.-7.p.m,—Park in Port Norris & ride the free shuttle to the festival along the Maurice River in Bivalve.

• 11 a.m.—Watch or join in the old- fashioned street parade from Port Norris to Bivalve.

• See the progress on the restoration of the historic 1904 Bivalve shipping sheds & wharves.

• Enjoy high-energy music on the big-top stage—Including the big-band sound of the Brown Street Chowder Society; Home Cookin' bluegrass & country; The Libbey Prison Minstrels string band; The Philadelphia Brigade brass band; choral performances by the Commercial Township School District performing arts department; and gospel by the Whittington Family Singers.

• View folklife demonstrations & exhibits, cooking demonstrations and more.

• Enjoy Jersey Fresh seafood & local fare at the food court; or visit the raw bar on the riverfront.

• Sample the fruits of local vineyards at the Jersey-grown wine tasting.

• Relax to music along the riverfront—acoustic dockside music by Ben Curtis, Bob Michel, Steve Byrne, Joe Kozak, more.

• Noon, 2 & 4 p.m.—Take a Maurice River cruise aboard NJ's official tall ship, the A.J. Meerwald (tickets $10 adults, $5 children).

•  1 & 3 p.m.—Visit East Point Lighthouse at the mouth of the river in Heislerville, Maurice River Township by car or take the shuttle.

• 2:30 p.m.—Pick a feisty crab and watch it run at the blue crab races at 2:30.

• Play at Royster's Reef.—Childrens games, mini-golf, crafts, puppet theater, entertainment, schooner playground, rain gutter boat races & much more.

3:30 p.m.—Compete for cash prizes in the crab picking contest; and,

6 p.m.—Compete for cash prizes in the N.J. Championship Oyster Shucking Contest

• Take a guided wetland walk.

• Paint-a-landscape.

• 4 p.m.—Visit Beaver Dam, Route 553, Newport, Downe Township (shuttle departs for free activities) or $5 boat tours to Glades Wildlife Refuge.

Sunday

Noon-5 p.m.—Lake Audrey, Buckshutem & Ferry roads, & Mauricetown Fire Hall, 9544 Noble St.

• Come to Lake Audrey, a 250-acre section of the Millville Wildlife Management Area on the outskirts of Mauricetown for a day of exciting outdoor activities. Free parking on-site at both the lake and the firehall.

• Paddle a kayak or canoe, or try a sailboat or rowboat on the lake (solo or with teacher; safety boats on site).

• 1 & 4 p.m.—retriever dog demonstrations.

• Try hands-on crafts including kite making.

• Enjoy outdoor exhibits and games.

• Paint-a-landscape.

• Test your skill at the archery & BB shooting range.

• Take a botany or bird walk.

• Witness a search & rescue (SAR) demonstration.

• Visit the nearby Mauricetown Firehall for lunch and take in more exhibits and lectures.
