BRIDGETON — And this year’s Cumberland County’s 2020 Turnout Trophy is presented to the city of Vineland and Stow Creek Township.

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Cumberland County voters cast ballots in record numbers in the Nov. 3 general election. Voting by mail as well as in person, nearly 71 percent of all registered voters across the county participated.

With more than 70 percent of its voters turning out, Vineland topped the city division this year. Stow Creek repeated its 2019 win over township rivals with a huge turnout of 85 percent. It was close though; Millville, last year’s city winner, was just 0.1 percent behind Vineland. Shiloh finished just 1.8 percent shy of Stow Creek.

The Cumberland County Clerk’s office established the Turnout Trophy competition in 2018 as an added incentive for voters to take part in elections – a friendly competition between the cities and townships to boost turnout.

“In establishing the contest we hoped to create good natured rivalries and bring attention to the importance of voting,” said Cumberland County Clerk Celeste Riley. “All of our municipalities did a great job in encouraging voters in this extraordinary year.”

The sculpted glass award, created by WheatonArts and displayed publicly at the Clerk’s Cumberland Mall office, will be engraved with the names of this year’s winners. Vineland and Stow Creek will be awarded 2020 championship banners to hang in their city and township offices.

Commissioner Co-Liaison and former Millville Mayor Jim Quinn joked: “The turnout rivalry between Vineland and Millville is as heated as their annual football rivalry. The high county-wide turnout is not just a reflection of the interest in this election, it is also a testament to the hard work of county and municipal officials to encourage people to vote and making voting during this pandemic as convenient as possible.”
