MORE THAN 250 students in grades sixth through 12th arrived at Camp Edge in Alloway Township to compete in New Jersey’s second National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) race of the 2019 season. NICA comprises 23 teams in New Jersey and holds mountain bike competitions for middle and high school students (boys & girls) throughout the state. Local bike store owners, Mike and Cathy Fraser, of Sneakers and Spokes started a local team, the Salem County Reactors, in 2017 with just four students. The team’s passion caught the attention of many others, with the team expanding to 42 students and 19 coaches this year. Camp Edge, for the second year, hosted one of NICA’s races in April. Dave Bailey, director of Ranch Hope; and Ryen Garrison, director of Camp Edge, opened the awards ceremony with words of encouragement and congratulations to the NICA organization for their efforts in running the league and to the student riders for their dedication to the sport of mountain biking. The Salem County Reactors team currently stands in third place for the season. First place podium winners from Salem County Reactors goes to siblings Trevor Buzby (sophomore) and Anna Buzby (seventh grade) defended their 1st place finishes from the first race.
