The CCIA hosts the event each March as part of its Cumberland County Clean Communities Program to promote awareness and accountability for protecting and preserving the environment. Sportsmen along with local civic, environmental, and school groups came together to participate in the event.
The following groups took part in this year’s event: AmeriCorps Ambassador, Bridgeton High School, Citizen United Maurice River, Competition Dirt Riders, Downtown Bridgeton, East Creek Gunning Club, Gerda Hoert, Good Sports Gunning Club, Hickory Gun Club, Lisa Santoro, Mauricetown Gun Club, Menantico Gun Club, Millville Women’s Club, Rosenhayn Gun Club, South Jersey Gas, Susan Lore, Tri-County Sportsmen Motorcycle Club, Venatores Gun Club, and Vineland High School SHAPE Club.
“For over 25 years the CCIA has been leading this community clean-up effort. It is inspiring to see such a wide variety of groups coming out to help keep Cumberland County beautiful,” said Loretta Pregartner, CCIA Recycling and Clean Communities coordinator. “Getting to meet our different groups, from long time sportsmen groups to first time participants, and to hear how thankful they are for this clean-up is extremely humbling.”
This annual clean-up is showing a downward trend in trash collection. In 2018 there was 9.18 tons of trash, 3.40 tons of tires, and 11.57 tons of concrete. This year participants collected 8.15 tons of trash and 3.44 tons of tires. While this may seem like less than good news, it is actually evidence that those who live, work, and enjoy Cumberland County are becoming more aware of littering and its effect on the environment, according to CCIA officials.
Sites selected by the groups were in Maurice River Township, Millville, Vineland, Bridgeton, Commercial Township, Lawrence Township, and Fairfield.
“Littering affects all areas of Cumberland County, especially our roads and highways. It’s up to each of us to accept responsibility for the day to day effects of littering,” Pregartner noted. “I am extremely grateful for those who came out and participated in this year’s Trash Hunt. Your dedicated service to the Annual Trash Hunt is what helps to keep Cumberland County beautiful.”
