In addition, it was stated that there will be two new programs this year. First is a preschool program. They are hiring a preschool certified teacher and will have morning and afternoon classes. They are also purchasing new playground equipment for the area of the preschoolers. The second program is a STEAM initiative. It’s a new technology lab for fourth and fifth graders. Hopewell will be the only school in the state with labs from fourth through eighth grade. Additionally, it was shared that the school has around 480 students and that three teachers will retire this year and one position will be replaced.

UPPER DEERFIELD TWP. — Feel the beat and enjoy the artistry during the Seabrook Buddhist Temple’s 73rd Annual Obon Memorial Folk Dance Festival slated for 4-9 p.m. July 21 at the Seabrook Buddhist Temple located at 9 Northville Road off of Route 77. Each year since 1945, the Seabrook Buddhist Temple has celebrated Obon. Temple members are proud to honor their heritage and share their history. The Obon Odori (dance) is a “Dance of Joy”, honoring all those who have passed. It also honors the sacrifices they have made. Day will feature: ethnic food booths and craft tables, Temple Meditation Garden open for viewing, Cherry Hill Ken-yu Kai: Kendo-Japanese Fencing and Swordsmanship (4 p.m.), lecture and Q&A on Buddhism in the Temple with Rev. Earl Ikeda (4:15-4:45 and 5-5:30 p.m.), Shotokan Karate Academy: Traditional Japanese Karate Demonstration (4:30 p.m.), Woodruff School Ace Music Performance (5 p.m.), Japanese folk dancing with dancers from the greater Delaware Valley region, New York, and Washington, D.C. as well as local dancers (6:15-6:50 p.m. and 8-8:40 p.m.), Japanese taiko drumming will be performed by the Seabrook Buddhist Temple’s Hoh Daiko Drummers (6:50-8 p.m.) with special guest performances by Soh Daiko Drummers of the New York Buddhist Church and Nen Daiko of the Ekoji Buddhist Temple, Fairfax Station, Va. Visitors are encouraged to bring folding, or lawn chairs. In addition the Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center, located in the Upper Deerfield Municipal Building on Route 77 in Seabrook will be open from 1-4 p.m. Approximately 500 families of Japanese descent relocated to Seabrook, New Jersey after the end of World War II. Seabrook is considered to be the largest resettlement of Japanese after the War. The SECC was established in 1994 and serves to preserve and present the rich multicultural heritage of the community. And, at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 22 the Seabrook Buddhist Temple will observe Obon Memorial Service. It will be officiated by Rev.
