The National Alliance on Mental Illness Cumberland County Chapter will hold its monthly meeting 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 18 at Chestnut Assembly of God, 2554 E. Chestnut Ave. The guest speaker is Phil Lubitz, associate director of NAMI New Jersey and Director of Advocacy Programs for NAMI New Jersey. Lubitz’s presentation will be What You Need to Know about HIPAA: Enhancing Family Participation in Treatment. HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, is, according to Lubitz, one of the most overused and misunderstood regulations governing mental health treatment. This presentation will dispel some myths about HIPAA and suggest ways for mental health consumers and professionals to create collaborations with families. NAMI Cumberland County is a support, education, and advocacy group serving consumers of mental health services, as well as the families and friends of persons affected by a serious mental illness.
